Pay Rate: $28.70 - $35.01 JOB SUMMARY: The School Resource Deputy serves as a certified law enforcement officer assigned full-time to a local school district. The deputy's goal is to foster a safe educational environment, prevent juvenile delinquency, and promote positive relationships between law enforcement and youth. The position is jointly supervised by the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office and the school district.
ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of state and local laws and ordinances, especially those related to juvenile justice.
Ability to use a firearm and law enforcement tools (baton, pepper spray, etc.).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Experience working with youth, schools, or community outreach preferred.
Ability to handle sensitive student-related matters with discretion.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Serve as a resource to school staff to prevent juvenile delinquency.
Act as a member of the school’s guidance and safety team (working with administrators, counselors, parents, and prevention agencies).
Notify appropriate administrators of school rule violations (not responsible for ordinary rule enforcement).
Assist in investigating school-related criminal law violations.
Supervise and provide a presence during after-school and evening activities.
Facilitate parent communication regarding youth safety and well-being.
Coordinate with local law enforcement and traffic safety units to address safety near schools.
Educate students and parents on law enforcement roles and public safety.
Work with juvenile justice, child protection, and other social agencies on prevention and intervention.
Support development of emergency response protocols and participate in safety planning.
Be visible during regular school hours and attend school functions when needed.
Deliver educational presentations in classrooms, assemblies, and community forums.
Attend mandatory trainings including: Bloodborne Pathogens, CPR/First Aid/Narcan, LEIN, Use of Force, Defensive Tactics, Domestic Violence, and others.
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED required.
GRADUATE OF THE MICHIGAN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TRAINING ACADEMY.
Previous law enforcement experience required; experience with youth or in schools preferred.
Must meet department’s physical and background requirements.
Must maintain current certification and meet continuing education/training requirements.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Employment is dependent on background check, criminal history, physical, comprehension exam and drug screen.Must maintain a valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Applicant must complete County application form.

Reports To: This position reports to the Uniform Response Lieutenant and the assigned school district Administration.
WORK LOCATION AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Based within assigned school buildings; daily travel to district schools.
Presence required during school days and related school events.
Must be able to walk, stand, or run for extended periods.
Must respond to emergencies, including after hours.
