JOB SUMMARY: Perform light maintenance repairs on fleet vehicles as needed (top off fluids: oil, transmission, brake, coolant, washer fluid; change lightbulbs, wipers, etc.) under the general guidance of the Master Mechanic. Maintain cleanliness and organization of parts/tool room. Assist Master Mechanic in maintenance and repair duties. Perform other related duties as assigned.

ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
  • Basic operations and maintenance of vehicle systems and components.
  • Basic diagnostic skills, mechanical knowledge.
  • Use and maintenance of shop, hand and power tools, such as sockets, wrenches, torque wrenches, pneumatic wrenches, greasing tools and other related tools.
  • Types and grades of lubricants, coolants, brake, steering, and other fluids used in vehicle and equipment servicing.
  • Transit mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination including computer and software programs relevant to work.


PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.
 
  1. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  2. Assist Master Mechanic in vehicle maintenance and repair duties.
  3. Read, interpret, and work from manuals, diagrams, and written instructions.
  4. Operate compressors, steam cleaners, pneumatic and electric tools.
  5. Deliver and pickup equipment requiring a Class C CDL.
  6. Maintain records and logs of servicing vehicles and equipment.
  7. Changes and installs bulbs, wiper blades and other simple mechanical parts.
  8. Cleans parts and engines, washes and cleans vehicles and equipment, and cleans shop and vehicle service and storage areas.
  9. Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE:
No more than two (2) points on driving record. Minimum of four (4) years unrestricted driving experience. Must have a minimum one-year formal mechanic' s training or experience in servicing light- and medium-duty vehicles. Experience working on buses or trucks.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must have or be able to acquire a minimum of a Class C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) Endorsement and Chauffeur' s License.

Must pass (80%) pre-test and basic driver comprehension skills examinations and pass the DOT physical and any other mandated testing. Will be reasonably accommodated when taking required test.

Reports To:                  This position reports to the Director of Public Transit and receives guidance from the Master Mechanic.


WORK LOCATION AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Evaluated according to the overall performance of duties, attendance, compliance with agency rules, policies, and prescribed safety regulations.

Under the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Regulations, this position is a Safety-Sensitive position and included in the drug and alcohol testing pool and is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident testing for drugs and alcohol.
